Hello Everyday Gratituders! Today I have a new challenge for us over the next 40 days leading up to Easter.

Why 40 days?

You may have heard people say, “I’m giving up x for Lent” (sometimes they they sincerely mean it or sometimes it’s just a throwaway line). Well today is the beginning of Lent. What is Lent, I hear you ask?

Lent marks the 40 days leading up to Easter Sunday. People in the Christian world mark it in different ways, but one of the traditional things to do was to fast, or give up some luxury, as a form of penitence. Many still do it, but we’ve never really celebrated Lent in our household, apart from going “oh – it’s Lent” or “hey! Time for pancakes!” (we don’t observe it because we know that our salvation doesn’t depend on anything we do!).

Having said that, Lent is still a good opportunity to reflect. My friend Virginia sent me a link to this blog post suggesting a ‘reverse Lent’, and wondered if I could tie it in with Everyday Gratitude. Why yes, yes I can! (thanks Gin!) For me, as a Christian, what better time to think about what I’m grateful for than the period before Easter, when we celebrate Jesus’ death and resurrection? That’s the thing I’m grateful for most of all!

So in addition to writing down what I’m grateful for in my Everyday Gratitude diary, I’m going to also give the Instagram account a bit of love and do a 40 Everyday Gratitudes challenge (40 days of gratitude was already taken :P). Would you like to join me? You don’t have to be a person of faith – it doesn’t have to have anything to do with Lent, that was just the trigger for this challenge. It will strengthen your gratitude practice, regardless of what you do or don’t believe!

All you have to do is Instagram the things you’re grateful for the next 40 days and tag them #40everydaygratitudes

Then at the end, it will be Easter and we can celebrate with chocolate (though feel free to celebrate with chocolate throughout – I know I will be). I’m collecting the tagged pics at the top of the home page so we can have a collage of what our little community is grateful for. Let me know what you think and join in!
